El Hombre (The man)

That night it rained copiously, the man had no choice but to go out into the street. On the avenue there were many puddles of water flooded. the man crossed the street quickly, he was wearing a gray raincoat, almost was not seen, when he was about to reach the other end of the avenue, a car blasted him wildly, the man reacted instinctively, he thought dodge the blow. The man did not turn around, he continued his march, at that time there were few people walking, unlike the large number of cars that slowly circulated on the street and illuminated the face of man. Without knowing how, suddenly realized that many drivers opened the door of their cars, climbed the fender, raised their heads trying to see what was happening meters ahead.
The man continued his march, a little more than two hundred meters saw a police car pass by, and in the distance you could hear the ululation of an ambulance that invaded the environment. he was in a hurry, he had time on him, he urged him to get to his appointment; little by little the cars were becoming less and less, in a short time the traffic was almost gone, the noise was diluted, along with the rain to be an absolute silence, the floor had dried, darkness invaded the night, only the light of the lanterns illuminated the sinister street now.
The man stopped on the great avenue, turned to one side and another of it without seeing anyone, or cars or people, was when he wondered why he had not turned to see what had happened when he went through the street and I hear a thud behind him. The man stood in the corner for a few minutes, suddenly a wind began to blow violently, he saw how the trees were shaking furiously until they almost broke their branches, the noise they produced was terrible, some branches fell on the avenue, giving turns and hitting the pavement roughly. The man clung to the column of a pedestrian bridge to avoid being swept away by the wind. Little by little the wind stopped; or the one that stopped was the time? already the man did not know, everything was getting so confusing. The man took out a cigarette, took it to his mouth, lit it, took a breath, grabbed his hair; He began to feel cold, turned to one side of the street and another, not even cars circulated. With his hands he rubbed his face, the street began to fill with a thick mist, which the man saw moving towards him. The Man did not know what or who he expected. Out of the dense fog he saw the silhouette of someone who was drawing against the light, walking with an agile step, but without hurry, it was a thin, tall man, no more than seventy years old, wearing a fedora hat; as he passed by he only looked at her and continued his walk until he lost himself in the mist.
The mist dissipated, it seemed that this man had taken it away, only a totally clear sky remained, without clouds, without stars, the moon shone splendidly on the highest. Man began to understand things, because he felt a great emptiness inside him; I knew that I had never belonged to any place, to anyone, I knew that at that moment and I would always be alone, I knew that I was in a place alien to him, awake? asleep? dead?. Nothing was alive anymore, the trees lay on their feet, the branches that had fallen, nothing, nothing moved. The houses, the pedestrian bridge, everything began to fall apart, only the man was still standing.
How did the man know that he no longer belonged to the place of the living? he only felt it, little by little his memories invaded him, they invaded the street, he saw himself, he listened, without knowing how, he appeared again in the street that crossed when the rain fell, but this time he saw himself Crossing it, he saw the car hit him, and it would rise above him and fall in a grotesque way on the wet floor. The man, or his soul, floated above the people who swirled around him, listened and watched as the rain fell on his face that had a grimace that he had never seen when looking at himself in the mirror; It was the grimace of a dead man, it was the grimace of a man who had freed himself from his body, from life, from dreams.
 Nothing made any sense.
